routes to cycling

Portsmouth is flat and compact - making it easy to get out and about on your bike. It is possible to cycle from the bottom of Southsea to the top of Paulsgrove in just 45 minutes at a comfortable pace. Healthy Pompey offer a range of projects and initiatives to get you and your family cycling and to keep you motivated.

There are a range of guided cycle rides available; short or long, traffic free, toddler friendly, tricky, easy or themed. Great for families and less confident cyclists, these will also be featured on our events page. Alternatively download a cycle map of the city which provides cyclists with details of the cycle routes in Portsmouth, so you can explore by yourself or with friends. Alternatively you can contact us for a free copy: Tel: 023 9283 4092 or Email: cityhelpdesk@portsmouthcc.gov.uk

Bike recycling/ repair projects have been set up around the city and are open to all age groups. People are invited to bring their bikes along for a check up from a qualified bike mechanic they will try and repair any problems that they find on site. Details can be found on our bike repair & recycling pages.

There are many locations around the city where people can practise stunt riding, including Southsea Skate Park (http://www.southseaskatepark.co.uk ), Kingston Recreation Ground and Bransbury Park. There is also an olympic standard skate park opening soon in Gosport.

For the more athletic (or curious) people, track-racing is available at Alexandria Velodrome, Moutbatten Centre, on Friday nights from 6pm, for only £1! This also includes the use of the facilities track-bikes should you want them, or take your own for a spin. Clarence Kingsbury, a Olympic Gold medalist who was born in Portsmouth, even trained on this facility! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wik/File1908 Clarence Kingsbury.JPG)
