Step out for a healthy New Year

Step out for a healthy New Year
December 21, 2010

With a range of healthy walks, a new year's resolution to be healthier is just a walk in the park.

The free walks, for all ages and fitness levels, take place accross the city and range from one-and-a-half to three miles. Many are wheelchair and buggy friendly and the trained volunteer walk leaders will be there to encourage and support you.

The well-planned, safe routes give you a chance to enjoy the views the city offers and covers a wide variety of environments, such as Old Portsmouth, Farlington Marshes and Hilsea Lines. One of the most popular is the weekly Monday lunchtime Pier to Pier walk, a flat two-and-a-half mile trip from South Parade Pier to Clarence Pier and back again starting promptly at 1pm.

The walks take place all accross the city at various times of the day/evening and the list includes a walk along Milton Foreshore, a lakeside walk at North Harbour, all along the Hilsea Lines, an Eastney evening seafront stroll and a wildlife walk around Baffins/Milton. For the full list - just request the leaflet mentioned below.

Why not make a start and join us on 12th January for the 2 mile walk around Old Portsmouth. This takes place every Wednesday at 1.30pm, meeting at the Royal Garrison Church.

To join a walk you don't need to book. Just turn up ten minutes before your first walk to complete a short health questionnaire.

The walks take place in all weathers so make sure you wear suitable clothing and comfortable shoes.

The healthy walks are a great way to start exercising and give you the opportunity to socialise with like-minded people. Just 30 minutes a day of moderate activity such as brisk walking is all it takes to feel a difference.
