The first NHS national bowel cancer symptom awareness campaign will launch on 30 January and run until the end of March 2012. The campaign advertisements will feature on TV and the radio and in other national media.
The campaign message is that 'loose poo' and 'blood in poo' for more than three weeks can be symptoms of bowel cancer and anyone with these symptoms should visit their doctor; and that catching cancer early makes it more treatable.
The campaign forms part of the DH's plan to tackle England's poor cancer survival rates compared with other European countries. It is estimated that 1700 lives could be saved every year if England's bowel cancer survival rates matched the best in Europe.
