Mental health is everybody's business, although some think it is taboo and shameful. Anxiety and depression are the most common mental illnesses in the UK. They affect 23% of women and 17% of men of working age.
Within Portsmouth's Adult Mental Health (AMH) team, based at The Friendship Centre in Elm Grove, there are Community Development Workers who are responsible for delivering racial equality within the team. Their remit is to support service users, carers and families from Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) communities to break down the stigma and fear of mental health. They also work closely with staff and service providers to ensure that they are delivering a more culturally appropriate and responsive service.
